en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 12, the UK's Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust announced remediation arrangements for the construction of Berwick Community Hospital, confirming that demolition of the installed mechanical and electrical systems, pipework, internal partitions, and fit-out components will begin on October 19, and that demolition and replacement of the building facade and secondary steel frame will commence in late November, while the main load-bearing steel structure will be retained. The hospital project had an original construction budget of approximately £35 million. After Robertson Construction North East took over, the construction plan was reformulated, with the main construction work scheduled for completion in summer 2028.

The project's original main contractor, Merit, entered administration in November 2025, causing construction of the hospital to stall. In January 2026, the client selected Robertson Construction North East as the replacement contractor, responsible for inspecting the existing works and developing the remaining construction plan. The new contractor subsequently carried out multiple rounds of detailed surveys of the completed building to identify facilities and building components requiring demolition, replacement, and reinstallation. The scope of remediation work announced this time was determined after the completion of on-site inspections.

The remediation works will first involve demolition of parts of the building interior, including the installed mechanical and electrical systems, service pipelines, partitions, and interior fittings. The exterior facade cladding and its supporting steel frame system will then be demolished and the relevant components replaced. This phase of construction is expected to last until spring 2027, during which there will be increased transport of construction materials, removal of demolition waste, and movement of construction vehicles. The hospital's main structure will not be demolished as a whole.

Berwick Community Hospital obtained planning permission in 2020, and the original contractor began construction in 2023, using a combination of factory prefabrication and on-site assembly. The original works were planned to use more than 600 prefabricated modules, with mechanical and electrical service systems installed through prefabricated plant rooms and pipeline assemblies. Before construction was interrupted in 2025, some inpatient wards and primary care service areas were nearing completion, while the surgical and endoscopy areas and the building's mechanical and electrical systems still required subsequent construction and testing.

The hospital is planned to provide inpatient, outpatient, imaging diagnostics, endoscopy, and other community healthcare services. The client plans to hold a public information session at Berwick Town Hall on December 9, 2026, to announce further construction arrangements.
