Piling Completed for £22.67 Million Urban Transport Bridge Project in the UK
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 15, UK construction contractor Esh Construction announced the completion of bridge piling for the Elland and West Vale transport improvement scheme in West Yorkshire. The project is being delivered by Calderdale Council with approved funding of £22,672,300, and includes two pedestrian and cycle bridges, road connection facilities, and public realm improvements. The piling work lasted 15 days, with 3 piling rigs deployed, completing an average of 8 concrete piles per day, with pile diameters of 400 to 500 mm and a maximum penetration depth of 19 m.

The construction site spans the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation, with some piles located in riverbank areas difficult for large construction machinery to access directly. Esh Construction used a 300-tonne crane to lift a compact piling rig to the opposite side of the river to complete piling in the restricted area. After piling, workers excavated the soil around the pile group to the design foundation level, broke off excess concrete from the pile heads, and constructed reinforced concrete pile caps to provide the foundation for subsequent bridge substructure works.
The project includes building a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the canal and river in Elland, connecting Park Road, Gas Works Lane, and Riverside Park, along with improvements to existing footpaths, the canal towpath, and surrounding public spaces. Riverside Park will also feature a children's activity area, drainage improvements, planting, and landscaping works.
The second bridge in the West Vale area spans the River Calder, accompanied by a new access route from Stainland Road extending along Black Brook and connecting with the existing pedestrian and cycle network. The two bridges and associated pathways form part of the Elland Access Package, which also includes access routes connecting to the planned Elland railway station.
The project received planning approval in November 2024. Calderdale Council commissioned Esh Construction and design partner Fairhurst in January 2025 to carry out detailed design, with main site construction starting in July 2026. The project is being delivered through YORhub's YORcivil3 procurement framework, with funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the UK Government's Transforming Cities Fund.
According to the construction schedule published by Calderdale Council, Riverside Park has been temporarily closed since July 27, 2026, for use as a bridge construction site, and is scheduled to reopen in early 2028. The contractor will complete site restoration and ancillary facility works before the park reopens.
