en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 15, United Utilities, a UK water company, announced that the new sewer on Peel Green Road in Eccles, Greater Manchester, has been connected to the existing drainage network and put into operation. Wastewater is now conveyed through the newly built pipeline to the Eccles Wastewater Treatment Plant. Following the completion of the related construction, Peel Green Road has fully reopened to vehicular traffic. The project is part of United Utilities' £300 million water infrastructure investment program in Eccles.

The Peel Green Road pipeline project was advanced in summer 2026, using specialized tunnel boring equipment to install a large-diameter sewer beneath the road. On May 22, United Utilities completed the underground boring work, after which the new pipeline was connected to the existing wastewater system. In August, the construction work included the installation of internal ladders in inspection chambers, drainage trench construction, and restoration of ancillary facilities. With the connection now complete, the newly built pipeline has officially taken on the task of wastewater conveyance.

The project construction was carried out with the participation of Murphy, United Utilities' engineering partner. Due to discrepancies between the actual locations of some underground utilities and existing structures and the pipeline drawings, the temporary road closure on Peel Green Road was extended during construction. The project adopted underground boring construction methods, reducing extensive road excavation.

United Utilities is simultaneously implementing an upgrade project at the Eccles Wastewater Treatment Plant, building a stormwater storage tank with a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters and installing new wastewater treatment equipment. The new storage facility will collect and temporarily store stormwater entering the wastewater system during heavy rainfall, and subsequently feed the stored volume into the treatment facilities. The treatment plant upgrade also involves modifications to the effluent treatment process, with treated final effluent discharged into Salteye Brook and the Manchester Ship Canal.

In addition to the pipeline now in operation, United Utilities is also building underground storage facilities near Junction 11 of the M60 motorway and along Liverpool Road. The company plans to invest more than £525 million in the Salford area between 2025 and 2030 to implement sewer network expansion, wastewater treatment facility renewal, and associated storage projects.
