en.Wedoany.com Reported - A design team has been sought to review renovation plans for the Grade I-listed Sheffield Town Hall.

The building, the seat of the city council, was designed in Renaissance Revival style by London architect Edward Mountford and built between 1890 and 1897, later unveiled by Queen Victoria.

On 19 October, Sheffield City Council published a procurement plan for a design team for the Town Hall restoration and renovation project, with a construction budget of approximately £36 million (including VAT), seeking professional service teams in architectural design, historic building conservation, and mechanical, electrical and structural engineering. The project is scheduled to formally issue the tender notice on 11 January 2027, with related services expected to commence on 17 May of the same year and run until July 2037.

The procurement scope covers RIBA Stages 2 to 7 design and engineering services, including lead architect, historic building conservation architect, acoustic engineer, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer, structural and civil engineer, fire engineer and design management personnel. The design team will undertake the deepening of the Town Hall restoration scheme, engineering technical design and related professional services during subsequent implementation stages.

Sheffield Town Hall was built between 1890 and 1897, designed by architect Edward Mountford, and is a Grade I listed building in the UK, currently still used as council offices and a venue for public events. The restoration scope previously determined by the council includes restoration of historic building structures and decorations, remediation of building safety and compliance defects, accessibility improvements and renewal of public spaces. A preliminary feasibility study in 2022 estimated the cost of different restoration options at between £20 million and £50 million.

In April 2025, the council selected Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios as the architectural designer for the Town Hall restoration project. This procurement plan further sets out the multidisciplinary team configuration required from scheme design through to the later stages of engineering implementation.
