en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 21, the UK North Sea Transition Authority formally approved the development and production license for the Jackdaw gas field, a project operated by Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Norway's Equinor. The gas field is located in the central UK North Sea, with a designed peak production capacity of approximately 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, and is scheduled to begin supplying natural gas by the end of October 2026. The project has completed the installation of major offshore facilities, and with this approval can now enter the final preparatory stage before production commences.

The Jackdaw gas field is located approximately 250 kilometers east of Aberdeen in water depths of about 78 meters, covering UK Continental Shelf blocks 30/02a, 30/03a and 30/02d. The development plan includes a normally unmanned wellhead platform, four development wells and a 31-kilometer subsea gas pipeline, with gas transported via pipeline to the existing Shearwater offshore processing hub. The platform jacket was installed in August 2023, the subsea pipeline was laid in July 2024, and the platform topsides were installed in October 2025.

The project initially received development consent in 2022. In January 2025, a UK court ruled that the original approval process had not adequately accounted for the greenhouse gas emissions from the final combustion of the gas, and therefore the original permit could no longer serve as the basis for production, though development construction was allowed to continue. The operator subsequently submitted supplementary materials in accordance with updated environmental assessment requirements, and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero agreed on October 21, 2026 to allow the regulator to reissue the production license.

According to the development plan disclosed by the UK government, the Jackdaw gas field can increase UK domestic natural gas production by approximately 6% at peak output, with a production period of up to approximately 11 years and cumulative gas production equivalent to approximately 40 million barrels of oil. The developer estimates that the project will create 27 new direct jobs and sustain 273 existing positions, and is expected to contribute approximately £2.9 billion to the UK economy.

The operator Adura will be responsible for subsequent production preparation and oil and gas field operations. According to Shell's announcement on October 21, Shell continues to support Adura in implementing the Jackdaw project. The UK North Sea Transition Authority confirmed that the formal approval enables the project to begin producing natural gas after completing the remaining development work.
