en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 20, the American architectural firm ISA announced the renovation project of a former chocolate factory in the Bridesburg neighborhood of Philadelphia. The former Blumenthal Brothers chocolate factory has been fully renovated and transformed into a community service center with a floor area of approximately 6,187 square meters. The project preserves the main structure of the three-story reinforced concrete factory building completed in 1922, while restoring and renovating the facade, 34 groups of vertical window openings, and the interior office spaces. Social services, childcare, and medical care providers have now moved in.

The factory building was originally designed by the Ballinger Company and was once used for the production of chocolate and confectionery. After Nestlé acquired the original operating company in 1984, the related production operations subsequently moved out of Philadelphia, and the factory remained vacant for a long time. ISA was responsible for the architectural design of this renovation, reconfiguring office, reception, and public activity areas while preserving the existing structure, floor spaces, and industrial building appearance.

The facade work included restoring 34 groups of vertical window openings, replacing energy-efficient glass, repairing aging masonry, repointing, and restoring terracotta decorative elements and the original signage. Among these, the window project represented an investment of USD 1.3 million and received support from the U.S. federal historic preservation tax credit and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Inside the building, the original factory's large-span floors and south-facing daylight windows were used to arrange open-plan office areas and public activity spaces, with independent offices separated by partial-height partitions. The project preserved the original concrete columns while adjusting interior partitions to increase the coverage of natural daylight.

The renovated community service center is shared by multiple organizations. Among them, Concilio, a nonprofit organization serving the Latino community, uses approximately 4,274 square meters of space for family services and community support operations. Other tenants include the Madden School childcare center, Gateway Community Action Partnership, and the BAYADA home health care agency.

The project received the 2026 Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, and the approximately 24.4-meter-tall water tower on the original factory site was also preserved.
