en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 28, U.S. automotive electronic systems supplier Stoneridge and autonomous driving technology company Kodiak AI confirmed a commercial vehicle autonomous driving technology collaboration. Stoneridge's MirrorEye camera monitoring system has been installed on trucks recently deployed with the Kodiak Driver autonomous driving system. The two parties also plan to study integrating more automotive electronics technologies into the Kodiak autonomous driving platform, with a focus on vehicle environmental perception, sensor layout, and in-vehicle data processing.

Kodiak Driver truck equipped with MirrorEye

The MirrorEye system applied in this deployment uses exterior digital cameras and in-cab high-definition displays to replace traditional rearview mirrors. Kodiak's existing SensorPod sensor modules are mounted on both sides of the truck cab and integrate sensing equipment for autonomous driving environmental perception; they were previously also equipped with traditional rearview mirrors. The MirrorEye cameras are installed in small brackets above the doors, enabling Kodiak to eliminate traditional rearview mirrors in subsequent SensorPod designs and further adjust the size, weight, and aerodynamic structure of the sensor modules.

MirrorEye has obtained an exemption from the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for traditional rearview mirrors, allowing eligible commercial trucks to use this camera monitoring system in place of conventional rearview mirrors. The exemption was renewed for five years in 2024. Kodiak can leverage this regulatory condition to develop SensorPod configurations without traditional rearview mirrors, reducing mechanical components and external attachments in the existing sensor modules.

The next phase of collaboration between the two parties will study further integration of other Stoneridge in-vehicle electronics technologies with the Kodiak Driver platform, including the co-design of camera systems and autonomous vehicle data processing architectures. This announcement confirms that MirrorEye has been applied to newly deployed vehicles, while other technology integrations remain in the collaborative research stage.
