en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 28, the Calgary Airport Authority announced that it has installed AI cameras at Cargo Apron 9 at Calgary International Airport (YYC) and deployed Assaia's ApronAI turnaround monitoring platform, with the system scheduled to officially go live on November 10. YYC thus becomes the first airport in Canada to deploy this technology in cargo operations.

ApronAI uses existing apron cameras and computer vision to automatically record the start and end times of key processes such as unloading, loading, and refueling for each cargo aircraft from arrival to departure, and synchronizes the same set of real-time turnaround data to the airport authority, cargo operators, and ground handlers. Cargo turnaround sequences vary significantly by cargo type—e-commerce parcels, temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals, perishables, out-of-gauge industrial equipment, and live animals each have different loading and unloading processes and durations—which makes cargo turnarounds less predictable than passenger scenarios.

YYC recorded more than 5,200 cargo movements last year and handles over 70% of Alberta's air cargo tonnage; the airport authority has invested more than CAD 100 million in cargo infrastructure, with facilities covering cargo types including e-commerce, perishables, pharmaceuticals, out-of-gauge equipment, and live animals. The cargo deployment go-live is scheduled ahead of the busiest cargo period of the year; the peak season will test the actual performance of operational processes, with results used for planning in 2027 and beyond.

This cargo deployment is an extension of ApronAI at YYC. Starting in October 2025, the airport has been phasing in the same platform across 67 passenger boarding gates, with the initial phase covering a 10-gate pilot, subsequently expanded to 47, and the remaining 10 to be connected after terminal renovations are completed. The passenger deployment portion is funded by a CAD 1.1 million grant from Transport Canada through the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF); this cargo deployment also receives NTCF support.
