U.S. Cumulative PV Module Production Exceeds 100 GW
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 30, at the manufacturing roundtable held on the first day of American Solar Week 2026, representatives from multiple companies discussed production line operations, upstream integration, workforce training, and supply chain development in U.S. solar manufacturing. U.S. cumulative PV module production reached 100 GWp (DC) in the second quarter of 2026, a scale estimated to have required approximately $21 billion in cumulative manufacturing capital expenditure, with related statistics covering more than five decades since the 1970s.

As manufacturing scale expands, factory operational efficiency has become a key focus for companies. Ingot, wafer, cell, and module production is not simply the assembly of different components; each stage involves independent production processes, equipment, and material systems. Integrating these stages into a single factory site requires coordinating production rhythms, equipment operation, and quality control across multiple processes, placing higher demands on factory management capabilities.
When SEG Solar expanded production in Houston, it collaborated with local community colleges and Texas A&M University and other educational institutions to leverage regional manufacturing talent resources for personnel training, and positioned supporting components such as backsheets and junction boxes near the company's factory site to reduce transportation costs. The company stated that by incorporating relevant components into its own production system, it can better control manufacturing costs and product profit margins.
Production quality testing has also become an issue that U.S. PV manufacturers need to address when scaling up. The head of RETC's quality department stated that as domestic manufacturers increase, testing institutions have seen a significant rise in demand for module samples and batch testing, and companies hope to identify process deviations early through prototype testing and consistency testing across different batches, reducing the risk of quality issues after modules enter commercial projects.
U.S. solar manufacturing also faces challenges such as a shortage of skilled operators, procurement of production equipment, and changes in trade policy. He believes that pursuing a fully localized silicon-based PV supply chain in the short term is unrealistic, and that companies and policymakers need to identify priority domestic manufacturing segments while obtaining certain specialized materials and equipment through international trade, avoiding supply chain closure that could drive up product costs or affect quality.
