en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 2, Northern Ireland's Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins approved the establishment of the Queen's Quay regeneration project in Derry, with an initial feasibility estimate of £36 million to £45 million. The project is located along the River Foyle and has now been approved to proceed with engineering design, environmental assessment, preparation of planning applications, and business case development, while subsequent construction remains subject to funding and statutory approvals.

Derry City and Strabane District Council was informed as early as its October 2023 meeting that the Queen's Quay quay structure had deteriorated and might require extensive repairs to ensure safety of use. The approved regeneration project will examine long-term replacement options for the quay, with subsequent design work required to further determine the engineering structure, scope of construction, and related environmental impacts.

Northern Ireland's Department for Infrastructure will coordinate the design work of Queen's Quay with the Derry Central Waterfront regeneration project, involving waterfront transport connections, walking and cycling routes, flood resilience, and public space linkages. The Central Waterfront project is being advanced jointly by the Department for Infrastructure and Derry City and Strabane District Council and forms part of the Derry and Strabane City Region Deal.

The £36 million to £45 million figure is an initial estimate for the Queen's Quay regeneration project, and the final investment amount will be determined based on engineering design and approval outcomes. Northern Ireland's Department for Infrastructure has not yet made any commitment to procurement or construction, and subsequent implementation of the project will still require funding to be secured, planning approval, and related statutory processes.
