Symrise announces the opening of a new production unit at its facility in Granada, Spain.
The new unit represents a major investment and is modeled on Symrise’s existing Hydrolite 5 green plant in Charleston, USA. With this additional capacity, the company can better respond to growing worldwide demand for the multifunctional ingredient. Hydrolite 5 green supports skin hydration, strengthens hair fibers, and enhances the sensorial profile of formulations while improving the efficacy of active components.
By establishing a production site in Europe, Symrise aims to reduce transport distances, supporting customers in lowering Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. The plant also contributes to the local economy by creating new roles in operations, purchasing, and engineering. In terms of sustainability, the facility recycles and upcycles by-products, setting a benchmark for efficiency and environmental stewardship.
This expansion reinforces Symrise’s leadership in 1,2-alkanediol production and advanced chemical engineering. The new plant features a continuous production process that ensures consistent quality and high energy efficiency. It includes an on-site hydrogen generation system with a closed-loop recycling design, which optimizes hydrogen use and reduces environmental impact. Automation is another key feature, increasing efficiency and strengthening process safety.
Commenting on the development, Yohanna Sander, VP Micro Protection Business Unit at Symrise, said: “The market for pentylene glycol is growing in line with the consumer shift to clean and natural beauty. Hydrolite 5 green delivers on the expectations for multifunctionality and sustainability as a fully upcycled material. It also brings many formulation benefits, including boosting the performance of other ingredients. By adding a new production unit in Spain, we are moving closer to our European customers giving them easier access and a lower carbon option. Our advanced technologies allow us to limit the carbon footprint of our own operations – thus contributing to a more sustainable value chain.”
Symrise stated that the facility reflects both its technological expertise and long-term commitment to sustainability. With expanded production in Spain, alongside its operations in the United States, the company is well-positioned to serve growing demand while supporting its customers’ environmental goals. The plant is expected to strengthen the supply chain, improve efficiency, and provide innovative solutions in line with market trends toward natural and sustainable ingredients.
Through this investment, Symrise continues to advance its role as a key supplier of cosmetic ingredients, combining innovation with environmental responsibility. The Granada facility is set to play an important role in ensuring reliable global access to Hydrolite 5 green while further embedding sustainability in the company’s value chain.
