The Ngezi mines complex, located in the Hartley Geological Complex on the Zimbabwean Great Dyke, has transitioned from open-pit to underground mining. Zimplats is expanding underground operations, and the new Sandvik fleet will reinforce these expansion efforts, enhancing productivity, safety, and operational efficiency.
Mats Eriksson, Sandvik Business Area Mining President, said: “We are proud to partner with Zimplats on this significant investment in the Ngezi underground operations. This order reflects our strong commitment to providing equipment and services that help our customers achieve their productivity, safety and sustainability targets.”
Sandvik is a global engineering group providing solutions for the manufacturing, mining, and infrastructure industries. The company continues to advance mining technology, with a focus on automation, safety, and operational efficiency.
In August 2025, Sandvik launched the AutoMine Surface Drilling Training Simulator, designed to enhance operator skills and support automated drilling processes. Compatible with all i-series surface drill rigs, the simulator offers a realistic, safe, and cost-effective training environment that aligns with modern mining requirements, allowing operators to improve performance without impacting ongoing production.
The Zimplats order is part of a broader trend in the mining industry to modernize underground operations, leveraging advanced equipment and automation to improve safety, reduce environmental impact, and increase productivity. The combination of Sandvik’s loaders, trucks, and drills will support the expansion of platinum group metal production while ensuring operational continuity and reliability.
With this contract, Sandvik strengthens its presence in the African mining sector, reinforcing its role as a provider of comprehensive equipment solutions and services that support long-term strategic goals for customers. The delivery schedule ensures that Zimplats will receive the new fleet in line with its ongoing underground development timeline, supporting the company’s transition from open-pit to underground mining and helping it meet growing global demand for platinum group metals.
