Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 23, Plug Power Inc. (Latham, N.Y.) announced the completion of the first phase of its hydrogen supply delivery for H2CAST (Hydrogen Cavern Storage Transition), providing 44.5 metric tons of hydrogen to the joint project led by Gasunie and STORAG ETZEL in Germany. Gasunie, a major energy infrastructure company, operates gas pipelines in the Netherlands and Northwest Germany, while STORAG ETZEL is Germany’s largest independent supplier of cavern storage facilities. The project repurposes two salt caverns into underground storage for renewable hydrogen, offering seasonal and high-capacity storage essential for grid balancing, renewable energy integration, and continuous hydrogen supply to industrial users. This initiative supports the development of Europe’s broader hydrogen infrastructure.
Between April and August 2025, Plug successfully delivered hydrogen to the H2CAST salt caverns, meeting all delivery timelines and demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale hydrogen transport and storage in Germany. Following this pilot, Plug was awarded a second delivery mandate for an additional 35 metric tons of hydrogen. The company will continue sourcing hydrogen from Hy2Gen ATLANTIS, an electrolyzer facility in Werlte, Germany, where Plug holds exclusive rights to all green hydrogen produced.
Jose Luis Crespo, President and CRO of Plug, said: “The success of our recent projects in Germany with H2CAST show that hydrogen works, and that it is scalable for strategic national energy requirements. Plug’s ability to deliver hydrogen on time, at volume, and with our own transport and delivery equipment for our customers underscores Plug’s leadership in Europe’s fast-growing hydrogen economy.”
Plug’s operations in Germany reflect the company’s broader goal of building extensive hydrogen production and fleet capacity across the European Union. The company operates a fleet of 36 Multi Element Gas Containers (MEGCs) rated at 350/380 bar, providing a flexible and scalable delivery capability. Plug continues to expand its hydrogen production infrastructure in Europe, highlighting strong market demand for its vertically integrated approach to meeting customer needs.
The H2CAST project expansion also demonstrates Plug’s engineering capabilities. The company designed a dedicated unloading skid for the facility, developed by its Netherlands-based team, connecting trailer operations directly into the customer’s existing infrastructure. This tailored solution ensures seamless delivery and allows customers to maximize the commercial value of hydrogen.
By providing both green hydrogen production and delivery capacity, Plug is proving that hydrogen is viable and ready to play a central role in Europe’s energy transition. The milestones achieved in Germany serve as a foundation for Plug’s expanding European operations, reinforcing its position as a global industrial gas company and a leading participant in the hydrogen ecosystem worldwide.
This project illustrates how renewable hydrogen, supported by advanced storage and transport infrastructure, can contribute to sustainable energy integration, industrial supply chains, and the growing European hydrogen economy.
