Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 22, The Government of India has formally approved the expansion of National Highway 65 (NH65), a vital arterial route linking Hyderabad in Telangana with Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. The sanctioned project covers a 189-kilometre section between the 40th kilometre and the 229th kilometre, upgrading the existing four-lane configuration (two lanes in each direction) to a six-lane divided carriageway with three lanes per direction.
Hyderabad is to benefit from improved connectivity with two key projects underway
This corridor is one of the busiest freight and passenger routes in southern India, connecting major industrial zones, agricultural regions, and urban centres. The widening is expected to significantly ease congestion, shorten travel times, and enhance road safety through improved design standards, wider medians, service roads where required, and better signage. Authorities have already initiated land acquisition processes across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to facilitate smooth execution of civil works in the coming phases.
In a separate development in the Hyderabad metropolitan area, a new 2.6-kilometre elevated bridge across the historic Mir Alam Tank has been cleared for construction. The structure will carry National Highway 44, the primary north-south corridor linking Hyderabad with Bengaluru and further extending to southern Tamil Nadu.
The four-lane bridge (two lanes in each direction) will provide a direct, high-capacity crossing over the water body, reducing pressure on existing surface-level routes and improving traffic flow between the two major technology and commercial hubs. The contract has been awarded to KNR Constructions Limited, with the total project cost estimated at US$37.7 million (approximately ₹318 crore). Construction is scheduled to commence shortly, following final technical approvals and environmental clearances.
Both initiatives form part of India’s continuing effort to modernise its National Highway network under the Bharatmala and other infrastructure development programmes, aimed at supporting economic growth, improving logistics efficiency, and ensuring safer and faster connectivity across the country. The combined upgrades on NH65 and NH44 will particularly benefit the movement of goods and passengers between Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and beyond, while accommodating rising vehicular traffic in one of India’s most dynamic economic regions.
