Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 26, Anglo American announced that its Quellaveco copper mine in Peru has produced one million tonnes of copper since operations began.
Construction of the mine started in 2018, with first copper output achieved in 2022. Following a consistent ramp-up, Quellaveco reached full design capacity and produced over 300,000 tonnes annually in both 2023 and 2024.
For 2025, the company expects production to range between 310,000 and 340,000 tonnes.
Quellaveco operates entirely on renewable electricity and features Peru's first fully autonomous drilling and haulage fleet. It also includes a remote operations centre and advanced processing systems.
Anglo American highlighted that the mine's strong performance demonstrates the significant volume of new copper supply needed to support growing global demand, driven by electrification and improving living standards worldwide.
The company stated that the mining sector will need to bring online the equivalent of approximately 60 mines of Quellaveco's scale by 2040 to satisfy projected future copper requirements.
Separately, Anglo American is strengthening its copper business through the acquisition of Canada-based Teck Resources. Teck operates four copper mines across the Americas with a combined annual output of around 446,000 tonnes.
