Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 26, EUROGATE, together with partners Embotech, MAFI, and ICT Group, has successfully concluded a comprehensive pilot project at EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The trial validated the readiness of Embotech's Autonomous Tractor Solutions (ATS) for real-world port operations.
Over several months, the autonomous system completed 18 different operational scenarios without failure, meeting the strict requirements of container terminal logistics. Notable capabilities demonstrated include safe interaction with rail cranes, operation in mixed traffic and various weather conditions, centimetre-accurate positioning under quay cranes for waterside container exchange, precise backwards driving, and reliable navigation in areas without GPS coverage.
The tests used a MAFI terminal tractor equipped with next-generation drive-by-wire technology, confirming that Embotech's ATS can be implemented across different vehicle brands and models.
Full integration was achieved between Embotech's Fleet Management System (FMS) and the terminal's Equipment Control System (ECS), ensuring smooth data flow with the Terminal Operating System (TOS).
"Working with Embotech, MAFI and ICT on this pilot underscores how autonomous driving can be deployed safely and effectively in our terminal environment," said Henrik Landau, Project Manager of this Proof-of-Concept at EUROGATE. "Passing all tests confirms that autonomous technology can integrate with our operations and IT systems while meeting the highest safety standards."
Niklas Thomas, Head of Business Development at Embotech, commented: “This collaboration with EUROGATE allowed us to prove that our ATS can serve as the main mode of horizontal transport on both landside and waterside. The successful pilot is an important milestone on the path to scalable, autonomous terminal logistics.”
The positive outcome marks a significant step toward broader adoption of driverless horizontal transport in container terminals, offering potential improvements in safety, efficiency, and operational flexibility.
In a separate development earlier this year, EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg GmbH took delivery of 15 hybrid Konecranes Noell straddle carriers to support its ongoing equipment modernisation programme.
