Wedoany.com Report-Dec.16, KBR, based in Houston, has secured a contract to provide technology and engineering services to IGNIS for a new green ammonia production facility in A Coruña, Spain.
The agreement includes proprietary engineering design and pre-front-end engineering services for a plant with an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia. The production process will utilize renewable energy sources to generate green hydrogen, which will then be synthesized into green ammonia. This product serves as an important component in renewable fertilizers, offers efficient storage and transportation options for renewable energy, and functions as a clean fuel alternative.
"We are proud to support IGNIS in harnessing Spain’s exceptional renewable energy resources to produce green ammonia for domestic and European markets," said Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions. "KBR's green ammonia solutions, along with complementary technologies such as H2ACT® ammonia cracking, make us a global leader in delivering reliable and energy-efficient ammonia technology at a lower capital cost."
The facility represents a step toward expanding sustainable chemical production in Europe, leveraging Spain's abundant renewable resources to meet growing demand for low-carbon alternatives in agriculture, energy storage, and marine fuel applications.
KBR has maintained a prominent position in ammonia technology development for many years. Since 1943, the company has licensed, engineered, or delivered more than 260 grassroots ammonia plants across the world, establishing extensive expertise in process optimization and large-scale implementation.
This project aligns with broader industry efforts to transition traditional ammonia production toward environmentally compatible methods. By integrating renewable electricity into hydrogen generation, the plant will significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil fuel-based approaches.
IGNIS, as the project developer, benefits from KBR's integrated solutions that emphasize operational reliability, energy efficiency, and cost competitiveness. The collaboration enables the deployment of proven technology tailored for green ammonia synthesis, supporting market requirements for sustainable products.
The A Coruña location provides strategic advantages, including access to renewable power generation and proximity to European consumption centres. Upon completion, the facility will contribute to supply security for green ammonia in fertilizer manufacturing and emerging energy carrier applications.
KBR's portfolio of sustainable technologies continues to facilitate the global shift toward decarbonized industrial processes, offering clients comprehensive support from conceptual design through operational phases.
