Wedoany.com Report-Dec.16, Mitsui Chemicals announced that its affiliate, Kumho Mitsui Chemicals Inc., will expand production capacity for methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) at its facility in Yeosu, Jeonnam Province, South Korea.

MDI serves as an essential raw material for polyurethane, applied in automotive components, furniture and bedding, thermal insulation for buildings and appliances, elastic fibers, and various adhesives. Global demand for MDI is expected to increase at approximately 5 percent annually, driven by initiatives to enhance building insulation for energy efficiency and rising requirements associated with economic development.

The expansion will add 100,000 tonnes per year, raising total capacity from 610,000 to 710,000 tonnes annually. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2026 and conclude in May 2027.

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals produces a range of MDI variants, including high-performance monomeric, modified, and high-viscosity polymeric types used in automotive parts, elastic fibers, and flame-retardant insulation, as well as standard polymeric MDI for residential and appliance insulation. The plant has operated at full utilization since a previous 200,000-tonne expansion completed in 2024.

This additional capacity will enable the company to meet growing needs in automotive applications and specialized high-performance MDI for advanced insulation materials.

The project will also leverage recycling facilities installed during the prior expansion, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions per unit of MDI produced. These measures support improved energy efficiency, cost optimization, and the development of a more sustainable manufacturing process.

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals seeks to strengthen its position as a leading global supplier of MDI. Through this investment, Mitsui Chemicals aims to advance its MDI business, which shows continued growth potential, while enhancing product performance across its portfolio.

The Yeosu site benefits from established infrastructure and operational expertise, positioning it to respond effectively to expanding market requirements. The focus on both capacity growth and environmental considerations reflects a balanced approach to long-term industry leadership and responsible production practices.
