Wedoany.com Report-Dec.17, DP World has enhanced its facilities in Romania through the deployment of two additional mobile harbour cranes and the development of a 119,000 square metre multimodal terminal platform at Constanța South Container Terminal (CSCT).
These enhancements substantially elevate the port's operational capacity amid increasing requirements for dependable supply networks in Europe.
Combined with prior initiatives, such as a dedicated RoRo terminal, a specialized project cargo area in Constanța, and an inland intermodal facility in Aiud, the improvements align with DP World's objectives to improve regional transportation linkages.
Kris Adams, Executive Vice President for Eastern Europe at DP World, said: "This significant investment in the Port of Constanța demonstrates our commitment to supporting international trade in the face of evolving global challenges. By enhancing the port's capacity, we will not only alleviate congestion but also strengthen Constanța's position as a regional logistics hub, enabling the terminal to operate at its full potential."
The new cranes contribute to raising CSCT's annual container processing target to 810,000 TEU in 2026–2027, marking one of the largest capacity increases at the location in recent periods.
Introduced during a phase of heightened activity, the equipment supports expanded cargo handling at Constanța, which has assumed greater importance following interruptions at Black Sea ports in Ukraine. Benefits from the cranes include:
An additional throughput of up to 280,000 tonnes in 2026–2027
Reduction in vessel waiting periods by more than 66 percent for grain shipments
Enhancement in container ship productivity by approximately 20 percent
Lower fuel usage and improved energy management overall
The freshly completed multimodal platform converts unused space into an efficient area for storing and managing large-scale cargo, specialized shipments, and containerized merchandise. This addition provides around 340,000 tonnes of yearly capacity and resolves a persistent operational constraint, introducing greater adaptability in handling procedures.
The upgrades facilitate trends toward relocating production and sourcing nearer to European consumers, particularly in the automotive sector, where Romania and adjacent nations are experiencing notable manufacturing growth.
Both installations received partial funding from the European Union, illustrating DP World's effectiveness in partnering with international organizations for major infrastructure projects.
These advancements are projected to foster ongoing expansion in trade volumes for Romania and surrounding areas, assisting enterprises throughout Europe in scaling production, varying transportation options, and easing reliance on overcrowded routes.
The infrastructure developments integrate into DP World's extensive European investment framework, promoting streamlined, connected, and environmentally considerate international logistics systems.
In a related update from last week, DP World initiated a 36-hour maritime route linking Dubai's Mina Rashid with Iraq's Umm Qasr Port. This service presents a quicker option compared to road transport and can carry up to 145 accompanied trailers on each voyage.
By concentrating resources on key nodes like Constanța, DP World strengthens alternative pathways that enhance reliability for importers and exporters across diverse commodity types.
The multimodal platform's focus on oversized and project cargo accommodates specialized needs in industries requiring precise handling and storage solutions.
Energy-efficient cranes contribute to sustainable operations, aligning equipment performance with broader goals of resource optimization.
Strategic positioning of Constanța as a hub leverages its geographic advantages for serving Central and Eastern European markets effectively.
Collaborative funding models demonstrate viable approaches to large-scale port modernization, combining private expertise with public support.
Overall, these steps reinforce resilient trade corridors, enabling adaptive responses to dynamic global conditions while supporting economic activity in connected regions.
