The Italian National Road Company (Anas) has recently successfully completed a comprehensive verification test for an advanced automatic water mist fire extinguishing system designed for road tunnel fires. This test was conducted in the "Verta" road tunnel in Omegna, marking a new phase in the application of tunnel fire safety technology.

The test took place in a road tunnel along State Road 229, focusing on evaluating a low-pressure fine water mist system capable of automatically activating during the early stages of a fire. The experiment simulated real fire scenarios triggered by cars and medium-sized commercial vehicles, using fuels such as wooden pallets and diesel, generating a heat release rate between 5 and 8 megawatts. The aim was to examine the system's actual effectiveness under complex operational conditions.

This testing activity holds significant technical and scientific value, verifying the reliability of this integrated system in road tunnel environments. It goes beyond previous testing methods that focused only on individual components, advocating for a holistic system concept that coordinates core safety elements such as ventilation, fire suppression, and smoke control.
