SpaceX Opposes Amazon's Satellite Launch Delay Request, Sparking Regulatory Controversy
Wedoany.com Report on Feb 6th, SpaceX recently filed a document with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), objecting to Amazon's satellite internet project Leo's application for a launch delay. In the document, SpaceX pointed out that delay requests should be based on unforeseen circumstances beyond the operator's control, and Amazon's situation does not meet this standard.

Amazon previously informed the FCC that it expects to be unable to launch half of its planned 3,200 satellites by July 30th, which is a key milestone for the Leo constellation deployment. Missing this deadline could lead to license restrictions for Amazon, prompting its request for additional time. SpaceX did not directly call for blocking Leo's construction but criticized Amazon's strategy as seeking "special treatment at the expense of other companies trying to serve Americans."
SpaceX further argued that Amazon's delay request should be treated as a modification application for the Leo constellation, as it could cause interference to other satellite systems, including Starlink. The company cited a 1999 FCC decision as an example, where the now-defunct Teledesic company was allowed to modify its satellite plan on the condition that the changes would not cause significant interference to other systems.
Amazon attributed the delay to launch capacity constraints and satellite redesign requirements, but SpaceX views this as a result of "Amazon's own decisions." Currently, the Leo project is providing testing services to some enterprise customers, while SpaceX's Starlink has over 2 million active users in the United States and more than 9 million globally.
The two companies have clashed multiple times in regulatory arenas. In 2021, Amazon opposed certain aspects of SpaceX's second-generation Starlink plan, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk responded by mocking former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Amazon has not yet commented on SpaceX's latest filing.
