Wedoany.com Report on Feb 7th, The Costa Rican architectural studio FAMM Arquitectura has designed a beachfront residence, Casa Tres Pochotes, on Hermosa Beach. The house centers around three existing pochote trees on the site as its core design element. Spanning 440 square meters, it embodies a landscape-first design philosophy.

The design of this landscape residence unfolds entirely around the trees, with room layouts either facing them or encircling them. The studio stated, "They provided the direction, rhythm, and even the spirit of the project." The residence's terraces and balconies cleverly frame views of the trees while utilizing the canopy to provide shade for outdoor spaces.
In terms of material selection, the team used local pochote wood cladding to cover the exterior walls, a material known for its waterproof and anti-aging properties. White brickwork creates a contrast with the wood tones, combined with exposed concrete elements, together creating a clean and powerful visual effect. Teak extends from the outdoor eaves to the indoor ceilings, and red cement-based polyurethane flooring adds richness to the material palette.

A central white brick volume divides the residence into two wings, forming a clear organizational system. The public areas are located in well-ventilated and shaded zones, while the private sleeping quarters are optimized for natural light and ventilation. Large windows paired with deep eaves both frame the landscape and promote air circulation.
This landscape residence embodies a tropical contemporary design concept, and the use of local materials reduces the environmental impact of transportation. The studio concluded, "The result is a house that dialogues harmoniously with the land, respecting and understanding the way life unfolds in the tropics." The project was designed by FAMM Arquitectura for its co-founders, with principal architects including Felipe Apéstegui and Mariano Mesalles.
