Wedoany.com Report on Feb 12th, WtEnergy, a waste-to-energy solutions company based in Barcelona, recently completed a €10 million funding round aimed at accelerating the promotion and application of its biomass and industrial waste gasification technology in the European market.

WtEnergy specializes in energy recovery through the gasification process. This round of funding will be used to advance project execution, optimize plant design, strengthen team building, expand the application areas of syngas, and develop the European market.

This funding round was led by SC Net Zero Ventures, a climate tech fund under Suma Capital, with participation from Shell Ventures and existing investor Cemex Ventures.

WtEnergy employs thermochemical conversion technology, using a bubbling fluidized bed gasifier under atmospheric pressure to convert biomass and solid waste into syngas. Its proprietary reforming process effectively removes impurities, producing clean syngas that can replace fossil fuels in industrial processes or be used to produce hydrogen, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel.

The company designs and operates modular plants ranging from 5 to 50 MW, which can be directly integrated into industrial sites. WtEnergy points out that this helps clients reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions, and promote a circular economy by recovering waste that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated.

Currently, WtEnergy focuses on key industrial decarbonization sectors such as cement, paper, animal by-product processing, chemicals, and ceramics, with several projects already in operation or advanced development stages within these industries.

Andrés Ponce, CEO of WtEnergy, stated, "This funding round is a significant milestone for WtEnergy. It supports us in accelerating the deployment of our technology on an industrial scale while helping clients recover energy from waste, transforming it into a competitive alternative energy source and a source of low-carbon molecules."

He added that securing support from partners like Shell Ventures, Cemex Ventures, and Suma Capital "strengthens our vision and inspires us to take new steps in our development."

Natalia Ruiz, Partner at Suma Capital, said, "We are delighted to support WtEnergy at this growth stage. Their technology, team, and demonstrated industrial appeal fully align with our investment strategy of backing proven, scalable technology solutions that drive industry transformation towards more efficient and low-carbon models."

WtEnergy was founded by Ponce in 2017, with Antonio Kraus joining as co-founder in 2019 to jointly drive business commercialization and implement the technology in strategic industries.

In 2023, the European Union provided €4.4 million in funding to Cemex and WtEnergy to apply syngas-based waste-to-fuel technology at a cement plant in Alicante, Spain.
