Wedoany.com Report on Feb 12th, Recently, PaxOcean, under the Kuok Maritime Group (KMG), announced the official opening of its green smart shipyard, constructed at a cost of SGD 200 million (approximately RMB 1.095 billion).

Located in the Jurong Industrial Estate at 5 Jalan Samulun (5JS), this new shipyard spans 17.26 hectares. It is equipped with two large dry docks, one floating dock, expanded wharf berths, and dedicated integrated workshops, enabling it to provide maintenance and repair services for complex, high-value maritime and offshore assets.

The project, which took two years to complete, received support from both JTC and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). The opening of the 5JS shipyard further solidifies Singapore's position as a leading global hub for maritime engineering, innovation, and sustainable development.

The 5JS shipyard replaces PaxOcean's previous facility at 33 Tuas Crescent. The significantly larger footprint of the new shipyard allows PaxOcean to handle more complex projects and shorten delivery times. Both local and international clients can benefit from PaxOcean's customized engineering solutions, covering repair and upgrades, newbuilds, and ship conversion projects.

Furthermore, with support from the EDB's R&D and Innovation Programme, PaxOcean has committed to investing over SGD 3.5 million in R&D funding over the next three years. Key investments will include establishing a new Centre of Engineering & Research Excellence. This center will enhance capabilities in areas such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), system integration, simulation, and digital twin applications, and will support the creation of 12 high-skilled engineering and R&D positions.

The 5JS shipyard features the specially built Innovation Hub@5JS (iHub5), an innovation initiative led by the Kuok Maritime Group. iHub5 serves as a collaborative platform, bringing together maritime industry experts, technology partners, and new-generation talent to accelerate the development of practical maritime solutions for the Kuok Maritime Group. Supported by both the Centre of Engineering & Research Excellence and iHub5, the new shipyard also serves as an ideal platform for testing and demonstrating new technologies, contributing to enhancing Singapore's overall capabilities in the R&D, testing, and deployment of next-generation maritime technologies.

To support the maritime industry's decarbonization journey and Singapore's net-zero targets, the new shipyard is designed with sustainability as a core principle. It adopts a phased implementation roadmap, integrating high-efficiency infrastructure and green operational models. This encompasses electrification initiatives, smart energy and logistics systems, as well as green solutions like renewable energy, biofuels, and carbon capture.

Additionally, 5JS is equipped with a large-scale solar photovoltaic system and a high-efficiency Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation (ACMV) system, optimizing environmental control while minimizing energy consumption.

To date, the new shipyard has received the Singapore Building and Construction Authority's (BCA) Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy (Provisional) certification, as well as a Whole Life Carbon certification. This certification not only strengthens Singapore's capabilities in sustainable shipbuilding and repair but also makes the 5JS shipyard an ideal platform for clients seeking environmentally friendly maritime solutions.

Mr. Tan Thai Yong, Managing Director and CEO of PaxOcean, stated: "The investment in 5JS demonstrates our long-term commitment to strengthening Singapore's position as a global leader in the maritime and offshore sectors. This moment also signifies the embodiment of the PaxOcean brand ethos. It reflects the standards we set for every project: building a future-ready business based on innovation, sustainability, and rigorous execution, setting new benchmarks for the industry from our base in Singapore and four other strategic locations in the region. All of this is made possible by our skilled and dedicated team, who actively embrace change and are ready to proudly welcome more partners to our advanced facilities."

It is understood that PaxOcean is a shipyard established by the multinational conglomerate Kuok Group to expand its ship repair and construction business. It owns and operates five shipyards in Singapore, China, and Indonesia, and also operates a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Saudi Arabia. Founded in 2007, PaxOcean now offers diversified services, including integrated solutions for newbuilds, ship repairs, vessel conversions and refurbishments, module fabrication, green recycling, and conventional and renewable energy.
