Conoship Launches CIP3800 All-Electric Cargo Ship with 40 MWh Battery

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Conoship International has expanded its CIP series with the launch of an all-electric version of the CIP3800 general cargo vessel, integrating a 40 MWh battery energy storage system on the proven 3,800 DWT coastal cargo platform.

Designed for short-sea routes, green shipping corridors, and emission-constrained coastal operations, the CIP3800 all-electric vessel measures 89.43 meters in length overall, with a beam of 13.2 meters and a draft of 5.2 meters.

Rather than developing a new hull for battery propulsion, Conoship has retained the existing CIP3800 hull lines, which have been validated through model tests, sea trials, and commercial operations. Battery-powered vessels demand stricter control of hydrodynamic resistance, as reducing propulsion power requirements directly extends operational range.

The 40 MWh battery installation is expected to support a range of 350 nautical miles at a speed of 10 knots, or approximately 640 to 650 nautical miles at 8 knots, with these figures already accounting for sea margin and hotel load allowances.

Battery capacity is distributed between dedicated forward and aft compartments to maintain vessel trim without the need for additional ballast water. Despite the significant battery weight, the vessel can still carry 3,200 tonnes of cargo at a draft of 5.20 meters. Conoship states that the additional weight from the energy storage system is largely offset by the elimination of conventional heavy fuel oil and marine diesel storage tanks, as well as lubricating oil and sludge tanks.

Cargo hold capacity remains at 4,737 cubic meters (167,300 cubic feet), featuring a single box-shaped hold design capable of carrying general cargo, bulk cargo, and project cargo.

For routes where charging infrastructure is not yet fully developed, Conoship can install a compact generator set as a range extender or backup power source, capable of operating on fuels such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) or biodiesel.

In full electric operation, the vessel achieves zero direct emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter.

The electric configuration joins the diesel-electric, methanol-ready, and wind-assisted propulsion options on the modular CIP3800 platform, allowing owners to select propulsion technology based on specific route conditions and available energy infrastructure.
