The United States Postal Service (USPS) is hiring restructuring consultants Alvarez & Marsal to address increasingly severe financial challenges, with officials warning that the agency may run out of cash within a year. Postmaster General David Steiner revealed in an interview on March 4 that all options are being evaluated, including potential service cuts and layoffs.

Steiner emphasized, "We must be prepared to do what we have to do, because we cannot rely on external forces. If we don't take action, no one will receive Valentine's Day gifts next year." This move highlights the severity of the USPS's long-term cash predicament, as the agency has been striving to cut costs and improve efficiency to curb annual losses.

Steiner took over as Postmaster General last year, succeeding Louis DeJoy, who left due to political pressure. Recent public discussions have considered privatizing the USPS or merging it into the Department of Commerce. According to the "Transport Topics" list of the world's top 50 largest freight companies, the USPS ranks fourth, underscoring its significant position in the global logistics sector.
