Insurance brokerage Marsh McLennan stated on Wednesday that it has held meetings with US officials to discuss how to restore maritime trade in the Persian Gulf against the backdrop of the Middle East situation. The regional circumstances have threatened the security of energy transportation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial shipping lane connecting Iran and Oman, with approximately 20% of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas trade relying on this waterway. Recently, commercial vessels have significantly slowed down due to the Middle East situation, raising concerns about potential long-term disruptions to global energy supplies.

Marsh McLennan assisted in establishing an international insurance mechanism for Ukrainian trade in 2023. The company welcomed a recent directive from the US International Development Finance Corporation aimed at providing political risk insurance and financial guarantees for Persian Gulf maritime trade.

US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday: "If necessary, the US Navy can begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz." He added that he had directed the US International Development Finance Corporation to mobilize support for affected trade activities.

This move is seen as one of the government's significant steps to control energy prices amid tensions in the Persian Gulf, but it also increases the risk factor for shipping through the critical waterway.

Iran has long threatened to potentially close the strait in response to external pressure. Although it has not completely blocked the passage, the Middle East situation has prompted insurers to reassess risk conditions in the region.

According to brokerage firm Gallagher, marine insurers in the London market are still providing insurance for vessels transiting the area, but premium rates have generally increased, with specific costs depending on vessel type, cargo nature, and sailing routes.
