The packaging will be launched in 10 European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain. The Morro coating is made from natural plant proteins without chemical modification, aiming to provide a plastic-free solution as an alternative to plastic coatings in traditional packaging. The packaging uses sustainable corrugated cardboard, is fully recyclable, and complies with single-use plastic directives.

Alexandra French, CEO of Xampla, stated: "Europe is progressing rapidly in packaging regulations, with strong demand for materials that can replace plastic. This expansion is about scale. We have proven that the Morro coating works, and now we are promoting it through major delivery platforms. Natural materials can compete and win in high-volume applications."

Global annual plastic waste production is approximately 400 million tons, with the food and beverage industry contributing about one-third. The Morro material is designed not to leave harmful residues, aiming to tackle plastic pollution with natural materials. Manufactured by Huhtamaki, the packaging is suitable for various foods and maintains performance when containing greasy or moist dishes.

Just Eat Takeaway.com's sustainability efforts include supporting partners in switching to more environmentally friendly alternatives. The new packaging expands the company's sustainable offerings, providing restaurants with more plastic-free options. The Morro coating is certified plastic-free and compatible with existing recycling streams, requiring no separate processing.

A Just Eat Takeaway.com spokesperson said: "We are delighted to collaborate with innovative companies that share our vision of eliminating single-use plastic waste. Expanding our partnership with Xampla is a significant milestone in accelerating the adoption of plastic-free packaging." The launch of this plant-based protein packaging marks a critical step for the food delivery industry in reducing plastic use.
