en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 25th, The development of carbon storage in the UK North Sea has seen new progress. The second round of carbon storage license applications closed on March 24, and the UK North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has received bidding applications for over 2 million acres of seabed area. These applications pave the way for further development of the carbon storage industry, highlighting the continuous progress in this field.UK North Sea Carbon Storage License Applications

The carbon storage license applications were launched in December 2025, following close consultations between NSTA and the Crown Estate, Crown Estate Scotland, and other seabed users. If these areas are licensed, they will further expand upon the four storage licenses already awarded in the UK.

The Endurance project received one storage license, targeting the first injection in 2028. The HyNet project was awarded three storage licenses, also planning the first injection in 2028. The UK government expects these two sites to directly create 4,000 jobs in the northwest and northeast of England, while supporting approximately 50,000 jobs nationwide in the long term.

The Endurance project, located off the coast of Teesside, recently began drilling an appraisal well, following the Bacton CCS project in the Hewett field in the southern North Sea. The NSTA supports the carbon storage industry through initiatives such as publishing maps and managing expectations.

Andy Brooks, Director of New Business at NSTA, stated: "The growth of the carbon storage industry has positive implications for jobs, skills, and supply chains in the UK. The UK has unique advantages in developing offshore energy, including carbon storage. We benefit from decades of North Sea experience, commercial knowledge, and favorable geological conditions."

The NSTA will carefully review the received carbon storage applications and work with applicants and other stakeholders to decide whether to award licenses. This includes further consultations with relevant bodies to ensure any awarded areas are spatially well-planned and coordinated with other marine sectors.
