en.Wedoany.com Reported - The pilot-scale platform for plant-based methyl selenocysteine biosynthesis technology, developed by the Oil Crops Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has officially commenced operation. This technology, independently developed by the team led by Academician Wang Hanzhong, achieves natural biosynthesis of methyl selenium without addition, extraction, or separation, filling the global gap in high-concentration plant-based methyl selenium synthesis.Image of the pilot platform or related research

After ten years of dedicated research, the team aggregated six key gene loci controlling selenium uptake and methyl selenium synthesis, creating a dedicated new rapeseed variety for methyl selenium biosynthesis named "Zhongyou Methyl Selenium No. 1". Through light-temperature coupling and precise water and fertilizer management, precise synthesis of methyl selenium within the plant is achieved. The product has a total selenium content exceeding 230 mg/kg, with organic selenium accounting for over 93% and methyl selenocysteine constituting more than 76% of the sum of detectable selenium forms.

Consuming just 1 gram of this product daily can meet the internationally recommended dosage for cancer prevention, offering advantages of low dosage, high efficacy, and excellent safety. Compared to traditional chemical synthesis and microbial fermentation processes, this new technology avoids complex procedures and the introduction of non-natural components, realizing a synergistic effect of natural nutrients.

Currently, the Oil Crops Research Institute has signed cooperation agreements with Caidian District in Wuhan City, Ziyang County in Shaanxi Province, Jiayu County in Hubei Province, Shuangfeng County in Hunan Province, and Qionglai City in Sichuan Province. It has also reached agreements for technology transfer and implementation with relevant industrial parks and local investment platforms to advance industrial layout.

The successful pilot-scale operation of this technology marks China's breakthrough from zero to one in the field of plant-based selenium nutritional fortifiers. It provides an efficient and safe raw material source for industries such as functional foods and nutritional supplements, promoting the deep integration of agricultural biotechnology and the health industry.
