en.Wedoany.com Reported - Alliance One International, LLC (referred to as Alliance One) announced on August 4, 2026, that it is advancing an agricultural innovation initiative in Tanzania, introducing a proprietary portfolio of tobacco seed varieties named Alliance One Varieties (AOV), aimed at helping farmers increase yields, improve leaf quality, and enhance resilience to climate-related challenges.

The AOV series currently includes three varieties—AOV 212, AOV 405, and AOV 815—developed at the company's global research, development, and deployment center in Passo do Sobrado, Brazil. Compared to traditional tobacco seeds in Tanzania, these varieties demonstrate superior performance, designed to promote sustainable tobacco production and improve farmer livelihoods.
After three years of evaluation across diverse environmental conditions, these varieties have been approved for registration and market release by the Tanzanian government. Field trials show yields of up to approximately 3,270 kilograms per hectare (2,920 pounds per acre), a 30% increase over older varieties, while also exhibiting resistance to environmental stresses such as disease and drought.
Helio Moura, the company's Senior Vice President of Environment, Sustainability, and Crop Governance, stated that farmers currently face increasingly unpredictable growing conditions, including variable weather patterns and pest and disease pressure, and seed innovation is one way to address these challenges. By expanding access to high-performance varieties, the company can help farmers boost productivity, improve crop quality, and thereby enhance livelihoods. Farmers in trials reported stronger crop performance, including higher yields, more leaves per plant, and increased income compared to traditional seeds, demonstrating that improved seeds support farmers while also contributing to a more resilient agricultural supply chain.
Alliance One's agricultural extension team continues to work with contracted farmers, providing agronomic guidance, technical training, and field support to help maximize the genetic value of improved seeds.
The company stated that it will continue to invest in research and development and expand access to climate-resilient tobacco seed varieties in more tobacco-producing countries, helping farmers increase productivity, improve livelihoods, and ensure long-term crop performance.
Alliance One International, LLC is an independent leaf tobacco supplier that works with tobacco farmers across 15 major sourcing regions, known for producing sustainable, traceable leaf tobacco. The company's website is www.aointl.com.
