Minister for Auckland Simeon Brown, Councillor Richard Hills, Mt Albert MP Helen White, Auckland Transport Chief Executive Stacey van der Putten, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei representatives, and project partners attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Hills stated: "Carrington Road currently carries approximately 15,000 vehicles per day, providing transport connections for the public, trains, State Highway 16, the Northwestern Cycleway, local residents, businesses, educational institutions, and surrounding suburbs."

Van der Putten said: "To keep Auckland vibrant and thriving, we need to provide reliable, convenient, and safe travel choices for all Aucklanders. It's an exciting time for transport in Auckland, with the City Rail Link opening later this year."

This road upgrade covers a 1.6-kilometre section of Carrington Road and includes underground utility upgrades, road widening, undergrounding of power lines, and a new pedestrian bridge spanning the railway line. Upon completion, it will feature T2 transit lanes during peak hours, new physically separated cycleways on both sides of the road, improved footpaths and crossing facilities, and upgraded traffic signals at key intersections. For every tree removed during the project, at least two new trees will be planted.

The road upgrade is being constructed by contractor Dempsey Wood. The project adopts a "dig once" approach in collaboration with Watercare, incorporating watermain upgrades to avoid future re-excavation. The works are designed to support the Te Kūkūnga Waka residential development near the Unitec campus, an area where at least 4,000 new homes and associated amenities will be built over the next 10 to 15 years.
