Wedoany.com Report-Mar 1, The approval of the full business case for the Cydnerth project, a significant low-carbon energy initiative in North Wales, has been described as a positive step for Anglesey’s Energy Island programme. Ambition North Wales granted the approval, allowing the project to move forward into its delivery phase.

The Cydnerth project will support the expansion of Menter Môn’s Morlais initiative and enhance the grid connection at Parc Cybi in Holyhead. With funding from the Welsh Government, this development is projected to generate energy sufficient for up to 180,000 households across Wales. The scheme will also enable the broader Morlais project to increase turbine installations within its designated area, moving closer to its approved capacity of 240MW.

The project is expected to create employment opportunities and bolster supply chains in the region, strengthening Anglesey’s role as a leader in low-carbon energy efforts. Anglesey Council leader and economic development portfolio holder, Cllr Gary Pritchard, commented: “This announcement is further excellent news for Morlais and enables this project to strengthen its position as the largest consented tidal scheme in Europe. It is also a boost to the ambitions of the county council in line with the established Energy Island Programme. The continued, praiseworthy work being done by the Morlais team is a key part of the Programme as we work to ensure our aim of seeing Anglesey at the forefront of research and development of low carbon energy and ensuring economic benefits for the Island’s residents.”

Cllr Pritchard also noted: “The council continues to support the Morlais project and is pleased to see its progression and advancement by virtue of this Growth Deal agreement. The programme will continue to ensure socio-economic advantages by creating jobs, developing local skills, creating supply chain opportunities and re-investing profit in environmental and community projects through Menter Môn.” He further stated: “The Morlais project is an essential part of the Energy Island development portfolio and aligns with the Decarbonisation Strategy of the Island, Wales and the UK.”

The Morlais project anticipates deploying its initial tidal energy devices at sea in 2026, following the completion of its substation in 2023. This milestone marks progress in the region’s efforts to advance renewable energy and contribute to broader decarbonisation goals. The initiative underscores a commitment to sustainable development, positioning Anglesey as a hub for innovative energy solutions while delivering tangible benefits to the local community.
