Wedoany.com Report-Mar 1, Polish distribution network operator TAURON has begun efforts to enhance efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across its heating networks. This aligns with the TAURON Group’s strategy for the next ten years, focusing on updating its heating assets.

At the Łagisza Power Plant in Będzin, preparatory work is underway for a new heat source. This includes a 140MWt/120MWe gas cogeneration unit designed to use zero-emission fuels, a Power-to-Heat technology unit, and a heat accumulator. The hybrid system aims to replace the existing coal unit’s output before 2030.

TAURON Nowa Energia is planning transformations and targeted investments in new heating sources across TAURON Ciepło locations. In Katowice’s CHP plant, options under review include a biomass boiler house, a gas cogeneration unit, electrode boilers, a heat pump, and a heat accumulator. For the Tychy CHP plant, analysis is ongoing to convert a coal boiler to biomass, alongside plans for an oil-gas boiler house, electrode boilers, and a heat accumulator. In Bielsko-Biała’s CHP plant, the approach involves building electrode boilers and a photovoltaic farm on-site. In Czechowice-Dziedzice, the company is exploring an alternative fuel combustion facility.

In Jaworzno, TAURON Ciepło intends to construct a unit with biomass boilers, electrode boilers, and a heat accumulator to supply heat to residents. The Cieszyn CHP plant has plans for gas engines and a biomass boiler house, with further decarbonization investments scheduled for heating plants in Olkusz, Zawiercie, and Kamienna Góra.

Marcin Staniszewski, president of TAURON Ciepło, stated: “We have planned the transformation of the heating segment in TAURON comprehensively and systematically. Our goal is to build modern, energy-efficient heating systems, taking into account the latest, emission-free technological solutions in heating. We want our systems to serve residents in the future, ensuring safe and stable heat supplies at socially acceptable prices.” He also said: “Strategic activities related to greening the heating sector are an extremely important step towards modernising the heating sector in TAURON, which will ultimately translate into the lives of residents and improve the air quality in the agglomeration and the region.”

TAURON Ciepło, the largest district heating provider in the Silesian-Dąbrowa agglomeration, operates a 1,100-kilometer heating network with a thermal capacity of 1,243MW, primarily from efficient cogeneration sources. The company delivers heat to 280,000 households, serving over 840,000 residents through more than 5,000 substations.

Under the TAURON Group Strategy 2025-2035, TAURON Ciepło aims to eliminate coal-based production by 2030, transitioning to fully low- and zero-emission heat sources. The plan includes developing over 1.1GWt of new or upgraded low-emission heating capacity, alongside investments in alternative fuel facilities.
