en.Wedoany.com Reported - New York University (NYU) has announced that it will offer the Google AI Professional Certificate course free of charge to all of its more than 700,000 alumni, aiming to help graduates continuously enhance their artificial intelligence skills after leaving school. Previously, this course was only available to current students; its expansion to alumni marks an initiative by the university to integrate lifelong learning and career education into its core mission.

NYU had already provided this certificate course to current students as part of its participation in the Google AI for Education Accelerator. This accelerator not only covers foundational AI courses but also offers a series of Google Career Certificates in fields such as cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management, and user experience design. With the expansion of eligibility for the AI Professional Certificate to alumni, interested graduates can apply for the free online course starting this summer through a streamlined registration process.
NYU President Linda G. Mills stated in a press release that AI is changing the skills employers demand, and this program aims to equip the alumni network with the AI literacy needed in the current market to support their success in their chosen paths. Vice President for Alumni Relations Brian Perillo added that the initiative provides many alumni who graduated before the advent of AI with a tangible opportunity to acquire specific skills and training, continuing the university's long-standing connection with its graduates.
The AI Professional Certificate, developed by Google experts and industry leaders, is delivered entirely online through the Coursera platform. Learners can complete a sequence of seven courses at their own pace, covering foundational AI knowledge as well as skills such as vibe coding, content creation, data analysis, application building, writing, and communication. Typically completable within six months, the course has been recognized by several major employers and is among the first AI programs to receive college credit recommendations from the American Council on Education.
This initiative comes at a time when the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is seen as one of the factors reducing entry-level job opportunities for recent college graduates. A new study by researchers at the New York Federal Reserve suggests that the expansion of remote work may have an even greater impact on graduate employment difficulties. By comparing unemployment rates between inexperienced and experienced workers in "remote-capable" occupations, such as software engineers, and "non-remote" occupations, such as nurses and mechanical engineers, the researchers found that remote work could account for 64% of the significant increase in unemployment among young graduates after the pandemic. Remote work often makes it harder for employers to train and mentor new employees, leading companies to be reluctant to hire less experienced staff for remote positions. By providing remote, industry-oriented AI training, NYU may help alleviate this challenge.
