en.Wedoany.com Reported - The National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI), its industry-academia alliance "Bolshoy MIFI" (Big MEPhI Alliance), and Rosatom are jointly advancing a project for ultra-small nuclear reactors with a power range of 5–50 MW, specifically designed to power data centers. This was recently stated by Valery Romanyuk, Vice-Rector of MEPhI and Chairman of the "Bolshoy MIFI" Alliance.
"We have a sub-project aimed at developing ultra-small nuclear reactors as an independent power source for data centers, with a power range of 5 to 50 MW," Romanyuk said during the 2026 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
He noted that the global load on data centers is continuously growing. With the increasing demand for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and large-scale data processing, the need for stable, reliable, and high-power energy supplies for data centers is also rising.
To drive this direction, MEPhI plans to establish a dedicated structural department on campus to focus on tasks related to energy supply for data centers and associated technology development. This department will work on new energy solutions, digital infrastructure, and application scenarios.
Additionally, within this framework, MEPhI plans to study how to optimize data center operations using artificial intelligence and promote the development of network infrastructure. These efforts will be integrated with the ultra-small reactor project to explore more efficient data center operating models.
The "Big MIFI" Alliance is a platform for cooperation between the university and large enterprises, focusing on comprehensive projects in areas such as nuclear energy, quantum technologies, and information technology. Through this mechanism, MEPhI and its corporate partners aim to promote cross-disciplinary technology integration and find new energy supply solutions for high-energy-consumption infrastructure like data centers.
