en.Wedoany.com Reported - Hindustan Zinc has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to develop a 250-hectare ecological restoration project at its Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter complex in Rajasthan, considered one of the largest industrial land restoration initiatives in India.
The project aims to transform a vast expanse of industrial land into a self-sustaining natural ecosystem, addressing biodiversity enhancement, climate resilience, and long-term ecological balance. Upon completion, it is expected to become one of the largest greenfield development projects within an industrial plant site globally.
Under the agreement, TERI will collaborate with Hindustan Zinc to design a scientifically structured restoration model, using native trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses adapted to the local ecosystem for ecological reconstruction.
The implementation approach also includes invasive species management, restoration of water bodies and aquatic habitats, and the establishment of long-term maintenance and protection systems. TERI will also support species selection and provide expert advice on planning, design, and implementation.
This initiative builds on earlier restoration efforts at the same site. At the Jarofix Yard within the Chanderiya complex, 22.25 hectares of industrial wasteland have been restored in phases; simultaneously, a 6-hectare biodiversity park is being developed on a safely capped landfill.
Using TERI's Mycorrhiza technology, nearly 56,400 native trees have been successfully planted, forming a dense green cover even under challenging industrial conditions.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, stated: "At Hindustan Zinc, sustainability is at the core of our operations. From water management and circular economy to decarbonization and biodiversity conservation, we are committed to building a responsible and future-ready operational system." He added that the partnership with TERI transforms industrial land into resilient green ecosystems that support local biodiversity and ecological restoration. Hindustan Zinc is the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), consistently benchmarking global standards in sustainable mining.
This ecological restoration project is part of Hindustan Zinc's broader ESG roadmap, which prioritizes land restoration, biodiversity conservation, water management, decarbonization, and responsible resource management.
The company stated that through a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement, it expects to meet over 70% of its electricity needs; meanwhile, its water recycling rate has reached 49%, and it operates a green mobility fleet of 232 vehicles, including electric and LNG-powered vehicles.
The company noted that with this new 250-hectare project, it is further advancing its goal of creating regenerative landscapes, aiming to deliver long-term value for biodiversity, communities, and the climate.
