en.Wedoany.com Reported - MEIL Group has completed and opened the Zojila Tunnel in northern India.

The tunnel, with a total length of 13.2 kilometers, is a single-tube two-way road tunnel at a maximum altitude of approximately 3,520 meters, making it the longest of its kind in the world.

The Zojila Tunnel project aims to improve traffic connectivity in one of the country's most challenging regions. Once operational, it will provide an all-weather road link between Srinagar and Ladakh, eliminating the disruptions caused by heavy snowfall in winter.

The breakthrough was achieved after nearly six years of continuous construction. MEIL's engineering team worked in sub-zero temperatures, avalanche-prone zones, and complex geological conditions, excavating 67 different types of geological rock formations using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

The tunnel has a cross-section width of 9.5 meters and a height of 7.57 meters.

MEIL attributed this "milestone achievement" to its thousands of employees, engineers, technicians, and workers. The company stated, "Above all, this achievement belongs to the people of India—it is a symbol of progress, resilience, and the shared aspiration to connect every corner of the nation."
