en.Wedoany.com Reported - General Motors is integrating AI tools into the design exploration of future Corvette models. NBC News recently toured the GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, led by CEO Mary Barra, and witnessed some of the AI-assisted design tools the company is currently using. The current C8 Chevrolet Corvette has been on the market for seven years, meaning engineers have long moved past the early sketch phase and are planning subsequent models, with the final next-generation vehicle bearing the imprint of AI.
During the program, a low-slung, mid-engine Corvette appeared on screen, but this was not the anticipated debut of the next-generation C9 Corvette. Instead, it was the CX concept car that Chevrolet released last year for the game Gran Turismo 7. Chevrolet has acknowledged that this vehicle will shape the future design direction of the Corvette, featuring sleek side panels, a short front end, and a wraparound windshield reminiscent of a Koenigsegg. However, it may still be several years before GM officially unveils the final look of the C9 Corvette.
In Corvette design, AI plays a supporting role rather than replacing designers. GM explained that it does not design vehicles from scratch using AI; designers still need to hand-draw sketches as usual. They then use AI tools to transform these sketches into detailed renderings and complex 3D animations, showcasing the vehicle's performance under real-world conditions. Additionally, engineers use a specialized AI tool as a virtual wind tunnel, allowing them to fine-tune and optimize design solutions in the digital world before actual manufacturing. Barra emphasized in the interview that such AI tools do not mean the company can design and produce cars with fewer people, but rather enable existing employees to accomplish more.
