en.Wedoany.com Reported - Skyborn Renewables and Amazon have reached an agreement on a 600 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) for the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, which is reportedly the largest single PPA ever signed in Germany.

Under the PPA, Amazon has committed to purchasing a portion of the carbon-free electricity generated by the Gennaker wind farm over the long term. Developed by Skyborn, the Gennaker wind farm has a total capacity of 976.5 MW and will become the largest offshore wind project in the German Baltic Sea. The site is located approximately 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Construction is expected to begin after financial close in the summer of 2026, with operations planned to commence by the end of 2028. The wind farm will consist of 63 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW.

Adam Thomsen, Chief Development Officer at Skyborn, stated that this agreement is a decisive milestone for the Gennaker project and Skyborn. As a flagship project for the company, Gennaker demonstrates how large-scale offshore wind power can be delivered reliably and scalably. He also noted that the agreement reflects the growing market demand for combining renewable electricity generation with robust, forward-looking infrastructure to build a more resilient energy system.

Once operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity annually to meet the needs of over one million households in Germany. The total investment in the project amounts to €3 billion (approximately $3.44 billion) and is expected to boost the economy of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region.

The manufacturing of monopile foundations for the turbines will be undertaken by EEW Special Pipe Construction (EEW SPC) in Rostock, located about 40 kilometers from the wind farm. The two companies stated that this contract will support local employment at EEW SPC, which currently employs 1,000 people.

Amazon's agreement surrounding the Gennaker project brings its carbon-free energy portfolio in Germany to 12 projects, with a total capacity exceeding 1.3 GW. Once all projects are operational, they are expected to provide enough electricity to cover the average annual consumption of over 1.8 million German households.

Rocco Bräuniger, Regional General Manager for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland at Amazon, stated that long-term cooperation between the public and private sectors is key to driving Germany's energy transition. By signing its largest PPA in Germany, Amazon provides certainty for Skyborn to advance the Gennaker project, enabling nearly 1 GW of new offshore wind capacity to connect to the grid, enhancing Germany's energy security, and supporting local jobs and investment.

Last September, Skyborn completed the contracting of all major components for the Gennaker offshore wind farm.
