en.Wedoany.com Reported - Garbage to Garden will take over the waste and recycling contract for the town of Scarborough, Maine, from Casella Waste Systems. The Portland, Maine-based company will end the long-term service provider status of Casella Waste Systems (Rutland, Vermont).

Town officials said Scarborough residents will continue to enjoy weekly curbside trash and single-stream recycling collection, with no service interruptions during the transition. The contract adds an optional benefit of weekly curbside composting collection, while collection routes and schedules across the town remain unchanged.

Garbage to Garden President and Founder Tyler Frank said Scarborough is exactly the type of community the company aims to serve—one that wants to operate trash, recycling, and composting as a single integrated system rather than a patchwork of separate services. He thanked the town for its trust and pledged to deliver a service program that residents will feel immediately.

The contract was awarded to Garbage to Garden through a competitive bidding process. The town said the company helped popularize curbside composting in New England and brings over a decade of experience in collection logistics, technology, and resident engagement.

The Scarborough contract is the company's second full municipal waste and recycling contract, following its launch in Bath, Maine, in July 2025.

Scarborough Town Manager Tom Hall said that in addition to competitive pricing, other factors—including a willingness to ensure a seamless transition for residents, a new fleet, and a commitment to customer service—confirmed that Garbage to Garden offered the best solution and is the right partner for the town.

Garbage to Garden's composting service will begin on July 1, and households that opt in will receive a compost bin for food scraps and yard waste collection. Scarborough residents can choose between two service levels: the Full Service Plan, which includes weekly curbside collection and weekly clean bin exchange; and the Scarborough Resident Rate Plan, which includes weekly collection and a 12-gallon bin provided at the start of service. Both plans accept all food scraps, including meat, dairy, and cooked food.

Scarborough Sustainability Manager Jami Fitch said they look forward to offering curbside composting to Scarborough residents as a subscription service, as part of the daily trash and recycling program. She noted this is a service the community has long requested and is pleased to make it happen.
