Orange Tunisia Activates MEDUSA Submarine Cable to Strengthen International Connectivity

The cable, which landed in Bizerte on November 1, 2025, is now fully operational. The MEDUSA submarine cable system was built by the Medusa Submarine Cable System, with Orange Tunisia owning the Tunisian segment and the Bizerte landing station. Spanning over 8,000 kilometers, the MEDUSA cable system connects 13 countries in Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Near East via submarine fiber optics, making it the largest submarine cable system in the region. The Tunisian segment is equipped with four fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 24 Tbps, designed to meet the transmission capacity required for the growth of digital services.

This new infrastructure will enhance Tunisia's international capacity, improve communication resilience through diversified international routing, provide secure connectivity to major European digital hubs, and support the development of cloud computing, data centers, artificial intelligence, and new digital services. The cable's activation will improve the country's internet quality by increasing capacity and enhancing connectivity diversity, while also improving the fluidity, availability, and reliability of data exchange to meet the demand for high-performance international connectivity from businesses, governments, operators, and digital platforms.

Orange Tunisia stated that the cable will support the development of next-generation technology infrastructure, data centers, and innovative services, and will consolidate Tunisia's role as a regional connectivity hub between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Following the DIDON cable, which entered service in 2014, the MEDUSA cable is part of the company's strategy to invest in international infrastructure. Stéphane Varret, General Manager of Orange Tunisia, said that the activation of the MEDUSA cable marks a milestone for Orange Tunisia and Tunisia's digital ecosystem, with investment goals aimed at improving internet quality, enhancing international network resilience, and bridging the two shores of the Mediterranean. The previous DIDON cable entered service in 2014.
