en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Philippines is set to build one of its largest floating solar projects, as SunAsia Energy and VinEnergo announce a strategic partnership to jointly develop a portfolio of water-based solar projects with a total value of approximately $406 million. The projects have a total installed capacity of 422 megawatts peak (MWp) and will be implemented in the provinces of Pampanga and Negros Occidental.

The projects include three large-scale floating solar facilities, expected to commence commercial operations between 2027 and 2028. These facilities utilize floating solar technology, installing solar panels on specially designed water-surface structures, avoiding significant disruption to existing aquaculture activities and fish pond operations, allowing local communities to maintain their livelihoods while supporting clean energy development.

Once operational, these solar facilities are expected to generate enough electricity annually to power over 278,000 households. The projects will also bring environmental benefits, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 460,888 tons per year, contributing to the regional transition towards a low-carbon energy system and enhancing energy security.

Over the next 18 months, the two companies will focus on engineering, design, and project development activities, including selecting marine engineering experts, technology providers, and experienced contractors capable of meeting the complex construction requirements of large-scale floating solar facilities.

The scale of the projects is reflected in the infrastructure requirements. The partners plan to install nearly 700,000 solar panels at the project sites and construct approximately 62 kilometers of transmission lines to connect the generated electricity to the national grid. These investments are expected to strengthen the Philippines' renewable energy infrastructure while creating opportunities for technical expertise and local economic activity.
