en.Wedoany.com Reported - Rio Brazil Terminal (RBT) — an operation of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — has received two new ship-to-shore cranes as part of its ongoing expansion and modernization plan.

ICTSI Brazil terminal acquires two new ship-to-shore cranes to handle larger vessels

In a statement, ICTSI said the new acquisition is expected to enhance the terminal's vessel handling capacity and overall efficiency at the berth.

The new cranes are designed to handle larger vessels up to 400 meters in length and with a capacity of 20,000 TEUs, helping to improve berth utilization and accelerate turnaround times.

Roberto Lopes, CEO of RBT, said these new assets will help improve operational efficiency and further enhance the quality of service provided to customers, marking significant progress in the ongoing expansion and modernization plan, which is expected to be completed by 2029.

This acquisition brings the total number of ship-to-shore cranes at RBT to six.

ICTSI noted that container throughput at the Port of Rio de Janeiro has grown significantly since 2023, reflecting the strong growth in Brazil's foreign trade. RBT's expansion aims to address the increasing trade volumes and the trend of larger vessels calling on the East Coast of South America, ensuring the terminal can meet future demand.

Last year, ICTSI stated that RBT would invest 948 million Brazilian reais between 2025 and 2029 to expand and modernize operations at Container Terminal 1 of the Port of Rio de Janeiro.

In addition to acquiring modern port equipment, the plan includes the consolidation and expansion of the yard, reorganization of operational areas to optimize internal processes, and the adoption of advanced technology and automation. ICTSI noted that these investments will position the Port of Rio de Janeiro more favorably in supporting Brazil's foreign trade and contribute to a more competitive national logistics chain by helping to alleviate bottlenecks at other ports.

Once completed, the expansion and infrastructure modernization plan will increase RBT's annual throughput capacity from the current 440,000 TEUs to 750,000 TEUs, and consolidate the Port of Rio de Janeiro's position as a leading logistics hub for the southwestern and central-western regions of Brazil.
