en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is in discussions with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to collaborate on enhancing the state grid's capacity to integrate rapidly growing wind and solar power generation.

Electricity Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar chaired the meeting. This meeting was convened following a review of the energy sector by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and his subsequent directives. The discussions focused on grid stability during peak renewable energy generation periods, supply-demand balancing, and improving the rapid response capability of thermal power plants to load fluctuations.

Participants agreed that improving the accuracy of power generation forecasting and establishing operational standards are key to reducing curtailment of wind and solar power and ensuring grid security and balance. Meanwhile, the meeting assessed the role of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced data analytics, and battery energy storage systems in smoothing renewable energy fluctuations and providing ancillary services.

The meeting noted that coordinating distributed generation, storage facilities, and conventional power plants to maintain system reliability requires modern grid management solutions. Priorities were also identified in areas such as technology research and development, pilot project promotion, and the application of mature solutions.

The Minister emphasized the necessity of building climate-resilient power infrastructure and instructed officials and experts to submit detailed proposals aimed at providing uninterrupted and reliable power across Tamil Nadu. It was decided to form a joint committee comprising expert groups from IIT Madras and the R&D team of TNEB to advance the relevant plans. Joint Managing Director (Finance) IS Messi Ramya will serve as the coordinator for this committee.

TNEB Chairman J. Radhakrishnan, Energy Department Principal Secretary Anil Meshram, and several senior officials participated in the discussions to coordinate efforts across operations, planning, and policy. The committee is expected to bridge the gap between technological R&D and utility operations, accelerating renewable energy grid integration while ensuring grid performance. This initiative aims to provide a clear roadmap for flexible grid operation, enhanced forecasting capabilities, and targeted investments.
