en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has announced that the two oldest operating nuclear power units in India—Units 1 and 2 of the Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant—have resumed power generation following extensive modernization. These boiling water reactors (BWRs), which began operation in 1969 in Maharashtra, were built by General Electric under a turnkey contract. Originally designed with a rated capacity of 200 MWe, their output was later reduced to 160 MWe (gross).

The two units underwent a six-month refurbishment between 2005 and 2006 and have been shut down since 2020 for major upgrades. On May 7 of this year, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) approved the resumption of continuous operation for Unit 2 of Tarapur. The upgrades included the complete replacement of reactor coolant recirculation piping with advanced corrosion-resistant stainless steel forged pipes and fittings, as well as the commissioning of a containment filtered venting system and a backup cooling water system. During the shutdown, aging condition and residual life assessments were conducted on key components such as pressure vessel welds. The AERB concluded that the reactors can continue to operate safely under normal maintenance and monitoring.

NPCIL confirmed on social media that both units have been reconnected to the grid. In addition to the BWR units, the Tarapur site also operates two indigenously designed pressurized heavy water reactors—Units 3 and 4—which were connected to the grid in 2005 and 2006, respectively. The site plans to build two indigenously designed small modular reactors: the 200 MWe BSMR-200 reactor based on pressurized water reactor technology and the 55 MWe SMR-55 reactor.
