en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Chilean government has approved Google's project to install a submarine cable between Chile and the Asia-Pacific region. The Humboldt Cable is expected to begin installation in the fourth quarter of 2026 and enter commercial operation in 2028.
This submarine cable system will position Chile as a gateway for data from the Asia-Pacific region to South America, driving the country's transformation into a regional digital hub. The Regional Coastal Use Committee of Chile's Valparaíso Region has approved the installation and operation of the system, with fiber optic cables connecting Chile to Australia.
The Humboldt Cable system, joined by Google in 2024, includes over 21,000 kilometers of submarine infrastructure, connecting South America to the Asia-Pacific region via two submarine fiber optic cables. One cable, measuring 14,800 kilometers and containing 16 fiber pairs, will connect the coastal city of Santo Domingo to Sydney, Australia. The other cable, 6,500 kilometers long and also containing 16 fiber pairs, will connect Santo Domingo to Panama City, the capital of the Republic of Panama.
The total investment for the project is $11.5 million, with Google funding 99% and the remaining 1% contributed by Desarrollo País, a public enterprise participating in the infrastructure project.
