en.Wedoany.com Reported - German energy company RWE and Greek electricity supplier PPC (Public Power Corporation) have completed the construction of a solar photovoltaic project portfolio with a total installed capacity of 930 megawatts in northern Greece.

The nine projects are located in the former Amyndeo open-pit lignite mining area in the Western Macedonia region, divided into three main project clusters. These projects were developed by Meton Energy, a joint venture established by RWE (holding 51%) and PPC (holding 49%). In addition to the recently commissioned Amyndeo project, the two companies also stated that they are developing two other projects in the Central Macedonia region—the Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar projects, with a total generation capacity of 567 megawatts peak (MWp), expected to be operational by 2027. These two projects were announced last year and have received funding support through the Recovery and Resilience Facility under the EU's NextGenerationEU program.
Charilaos Mitrelias, CEO of RWE Renewables Hellas and CEO of Meton Energy, stated that these projects mark a new chapter for Western Macedonia, which is steadily transitioning from a lignite power generation hub to a renewable energy hub. Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy CEO of the RES PPC Group (Renewable Energy Business Unit of PPC Group), said that PPC will continue to invest in renewable energy, aiming to achieve an installed capacity of 19 gigawatts by the end of 2030, while also enhancing momentum by rapidly integrating energy storage projects into its portfolio and driving the company's transformation into the Powertech Group.
In April this year, PPC announced the completion of another cluster of photovoltaic projects in the mining area of northern Greece, with a total capacity of 2.14 gigawatts, which is said to account for 6% of Greece's total electricity demand.
