en.Wedoany.com Reported - JBS and Âmbar Energia will invest 65 million reais to expand biomethane production, aiming to nearly quadruple the use of renewable fuel in the group's industrial processes and logistics. The two companies, both under the J&F holding group, disclosed this plan to Reuters.

JBS and Âmbar announce 65 million reais investment in biomethane

These projects will be carried out at Friboi's plants in Campo Grande II (Mato Grosso do Sul), Lins (São Paulo), and Andradina (São Paulo), along with other initiatives under evaluation. These projects are expected to increase the company's daily biomethane production to approximately 40,000 cubic meters, equivalent to an annual output of 14 million cubic meters.

According to the timeline, the current daily production of 8,000 cubic meters will increase to 20,000 cubic meters by February 2027, and is expected to reach a total of 40,000 cubic meters per day by July 2028.

JBS stated that this renewable fuel will be used in logistics (JBS truck fleet) and industrial applications, such as protein dryers and other equipment requiring thermal energy, as well as other processes that currently consume gaseous fuels.

The planned investment will cover equipment procurement, industrial integration engineering, installation of purification systems, compression, storage, and the infrastructure required for biomethane production and distribution.

This initiative aligns with the industry trend of adopting biomethane, particularly among companies that use natural gas and diesel in their production processes and logistics, as a means of fuel decarbonization.

Biomethane is a renewable gas that serves as an alternative to fossil fuels. It is derived from the treatment of biogas, which originates from urban and agricultural organic waste.

Marcelo Dresch, Executive Manager of Sustainability and Biogas at Âmbar, stated in a release that the solution with JBS "goes beyond a single project" and represents "a decarbonization platform with growth potential within the group and the market."

JBS also indicated that it is exploring new opportunities for biomethane production beyond Friboi, within other operations of the J&F group, but the analysis remains at a technical stage with no confirmed projects.

This investment to expand biomethane production continues the company's strategy related to biogas. Since 2021, Friboi has installed anaerobic digesters to treat wastewater at nine meat processing plants, capturing methane generated from industrial operations and converting it into biogas, marking the company's initial investment in this feedstock.

Since 2023, four Friboi plants have partially used electricity generated from methane captured in their own operations, replacing diesel with biogas.
