en.Wedoany.com Reported - Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) has recently signed a strategic memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting the global deployment of district cooling systems through enhanced international cooperation.
The memorandum was signed by Empower CEO and International District Energy Association (IDEA) Board Member Ahmad Bin Shafar, along with representatives from multiple countries and international organizations. The signing ceremony took place during the 117th International District Energy Association Conference and Exhibition (IDEA 2026) held in Ottawa, Canada, in 2026.

The memorandum positions district cooling as a practical solution for improving energy efficiency, enhancing energy security, supporting local economies, and reducing carbon emissions. The parties commit to expanding the application of district cooling systems in cities through enhanced knowledge exchange, technological innovation, and the development of policy and regulatory frameworks, in order to support the transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
The agreement aligns with the climate and sustainable development goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Empower stated that the memorandum strengthens its role in supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy through strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange, while also consolidating its position as a global district cooling provider and contributor to sustainable urban energy systems.
Bin Shafar stated that the agreement reflects the international community's growing recognition of district cooling as an effective climate and energy solution. He said: "At Empower, we are proud to represent the UAE in this important initiative, which reflects the country's leading role in supporting climate solutions and driving the transition to a low-carbon economy." He added that district cooling and district energy will play a significant role in building more efficient, resilient, and future-ready cities, and that enhanced international cooperation helps accelerate the development of sustainable urban energy systems while supporting economic growth and improving communities' ability to respond to climate change.
Empower participated as a diamond sponsor in the IDEA Conference and Exhibition held from June 23 to 26, 2026, under the theme "Connecting Networks." Empower's participation included a keynote session chaired by Bin Shafar and meetings with senior officials and industry experts, focusing on opportunities to strengthen international cooperation and share best practices in the district cooling industry.
